Set in picturesque South Somerset, Clapton Mill is a
unique piece of our industrial heritage.
Corn milling has taken place on this site since at least
1257 and probably even earlier. The current building, which is Grade
2* listed, dates from the 18th Century although the interior was extensively
remodelled in the 1850s. Since then it has remained virtually
unchanged throughout its 150 year history.
With four pairs of stones, a huge 21ft diameter
waterwheel - fed from two rivers, a complete Armfield roller mill plant and
its original Ruston and Hornsby oil engine, Clapton Mill has a wealth of
impressive features.
The Mill worked commercially until 1991. A
recently installed hydroelectric turbine, generating green energy, has also
brought new life and purpose and will help to secure the Mill's future.
